Needle Sharp x Merchant and Mills Collab

Welcome back to the blog! Today, I am excited to introduce you to Needle Sharp, an extraordinary small online business. Founded by the talented Mary in 2017, Needle Sharp offers unique subscription boxes and sewing kits that are truly one of a kind. However, today I want to talk about the incredible fabric selection that Needle Sharp offers. As someone who is always on the lookout for great fabric from small businesses, I knew that Needle Sharp ticked all my boxes.

Mary has done an exceptional job curating her fabric selection. She has an incredible range of high-quality linens, denims, and knits that are sure to delight any sewing enthusiast. What's more, many of the fabrics offered by Needle Sharp can be found in larger stores at similar or even more expensive prices. So why not support a small business and make them jump for joy?

For my latest project, I chose the highly sought-after Merchant and Mills quilted jacquard fabric. You know the one I'm talking about! This fabric has a unique quilted effect due to its woven construction, but it's surprisingly lightweight and feels amazing against the skin. As soon as I saw it, I knew that I had to make myself an LB pullover from Paper Theory Patterns - another viral sensation amongst the sewing community.

Cutting the pattern was a breeze - it's just three pieces if you're not doing the turtleneck neckline: the front bodice, back, and sleeves. For the neckline, I opted for the lower neckline and used ribbing. I also carried the ribbing to the sleeve hems and the hem itself.

While the sewing was straightforward, this fabric did have a tendency to fray. I found that it was important to pay attention to my seams and finishes to avoid any issues. Thankfully, my trusty overlocker was a lifesaver during this project. I made sure to take extra care around the neckline and sleeve hems until I attached the ribbing.

In total, my new sweater took me just 1.5 hours from cutting to sewing. Even my husband was impressed by the end result, exclaiming "That looks like you spent $600 on that in a store we'd never walk into because we know it would cost $600." I was thrilled - this sweater is probably the most expensive-looking garment I've ever produced, and it perfectly fulfills my need for a high-quality basic piece.

I cannot thank Mary enough for introducing me to her amazing shop and for allowing me to create something I've always wanted to make. The quality of her fabrics is exceptional, and while I didn't delve into the subscription boxes and sewing kits in-depth, they are a fantastic part of her business too. Be sure to check out Needle Sharp and support a fantastic small business today!
