The Moxie Dress - Collar and Front Opening Hack

Things are heating up—which means it’s almost Moxie Dress season. I was scrolling the Anthropologie app when a Damson Madder dress caught my eye. My first thought? I can hack that. It’s not an exact match, but it’s inspired by it—and I love how it turned out.

What I Did:

To get that front slit look, I borrowed a pattern piece from my upcoming Cambia Top (coming soon!) so I could add a slit down the front without needing extra ease—The Moxie already has that covered.

Then I tweaked the collar:

  • I started with the original collar pattern from The Moxie Dress.

  • Moved the front edge in by 1 cm from the fold line.

  • Brought the back edge in by 1.5 cm. I also removed 1.5 cm from the back piece so it could now be cut on the fold.

  • Straightened the bottom edge at the back to ensure it could be cut on the fold now..

Once those changes were done, I followed the Moxie Dress instructions as usual—except now the collar opens at the front instead of the back. Easy!

To make your life easier, I’ve added the modified pattern piece I used as a free download [found here]. Feel free to use this with other patterns as well. Here are the steps I followed to insert it.

How to Add the Front Slit Facing

I hope you give this hack a go! If you’re not up for modifying the collar too much, try a rounded or scalloped edge for an easy refresh. If there’s enough buzz I might just create the collar across all sizes. Let me know what you think?

Thanks for stopping by—and happy Summer sewing!
